The Funky Story

THE BEGINNING

We began operations in 2013 as a small travelling bookshop (we still travel all over India!) with a modest collection of 250 titles.

Where do we begin? Pop-up bookshops, literature festivals, book launches and tours, events, workshops, seminars & lectures, you name it, we do it. Anything to do with shaping the future of children’s literature in India.

ABOUT FUNKY RAINBOW

Funky Rainbow is an independent children’s bookstore in Bangalore, dedicated to providing young readers with high-quality Indian literature. Co-founded by Vidya Mani, Shyam Madhavan Sarada (also known as Greystroke), and Muthamma Devaya, Funky Rainbow aims to fill the significant gap in the market for relatable and culturally relevant children’s books. 

Our mission is to create a beautiful space where children can explore diverse stories that reflect their own experiences and cultural backgrounds. Each book in our collection is carefully curated to meet stringent literary and illustrative standards, ensuring that our young readers are exposed to engaging, thoughtful, and bias-free content.

At Funky Rainbow, we take pride in our extensive collection of children’s books, which includes works by renowned Indian authors such as RK Narayan and Ruskin Bond, as well as emerging writers who bring fresh perspectives to children’s literature.

We believe in the power of community and actively engage with schools, libraries, and various public spaces to promote reading among children. Funky Rainbow collaborates with over 50 schools across India to enrich their libraries with Indian children’s books and implement comprehensive reading programs. We also participate in literature festivals, environmental fairs, and other community events, making literature accessible and exciting for children. Through these initiatives, we aim to create meaningful connections between books and readers, helping children discover the joy of reading and the richness of Indian literature.
